The electromagnetic field generates currents of electricity to flow through the object, and this causes heat to rise in the object. The amount of heat that is generated is dependent in the degree of resistance that the object has against currents, as well as the length of the exposure.

The heating effect of RF EMF is due to the polarity the compounds. When the RF energy passes through a polar substance that has atomic nuclei, electrons inside the nuclei are displace from their equilibrium position. As a result, the electrons around the nuclei transform into induced dipoles. The dipole realignment happens hundreds of times per second. In this process, friction develops between the rotating molecules, and heat is generated across the entire surface of the material.

Although RF radiation doesn't directly damage DNA, it could create heat within body tissues, which could lead to burning or damage to tissue. Contrary to ionizing radiation RF radiation isn't believed to cause cancer. However, certain studies show higher rates of tumors in lab animals exposed to RF radiation.

There are a variety of federal agencies involved in controlling and monitoring the consequences from RF radiation on the human body. This includes those of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They track RF exposure to ensure it's safe for workers. They also encourage employees to limit their exposure if they are working in high-frequency RF environments.
